Some of The Last Plants That Will be Growing Until the First Ground Freeze

Right now most of the garden plants are done with the exception of cool weather plants and a couple of eggplants.  I have picked an eggplant from each of my plants this season, but I am getting a second crop from a couple of my plants.  Since this week a frost may occur I might have to pick them prematurely before the cold ends the summer season for good this year.

I am also growing a cool weather crop for the fall including some broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, and a few plants of celery.  I even have rhubarb which I started this season which will hopefully last through the winter once I place some straw over it for protection from the freezing cold.

The only plants that I added into the garden this fall was my kale.  Although kale can be grown in the spring I have found that growing them in the fall is much easier and there is much more room to grow a couple of rows of this delicious plant.  Since they are easy to freeze and store it makes them the perfect leaf for any season.

All the other plants were planted in the springtime and have endured the hot temperatures that came during this summer.  Since I plant a sun king hybrid of broccoli they are able to withstand the heat and still produce good sized heads and side shoots.  Right now I am working on two broccoli plants and I have been harvesting broccoli from them since sometime in late July or August.  They are still good and both plants are continuing to supply me with more broccoli each week.

Brussel sprouts and celery I have not harvested yet even though they were planted all the way back in the springtime.  I will have to plant them a little bit earlier and probably start both of them inside in small pots or possibly peat pots.

The good news is that the heat did not damage them and I still might be able to pick them once they are ready for harvesting.  My celery might be ready in a couple of weeks and my brussel sprouts might soon be ready for picking.  At least my brussel sprout plant is producing sprouts on the stem and in-between the leaves.  I can’t wait to start harvesting all these fall crop plants

A Quick Update and Progress of My Plants as of July 28

I have been taking many pictures of my plants especially my pumpkins and melons when they begin to grow so that I can easily see their growth from the first day until I harvest them.  It is very interesting to watch them during the growth phase because they get bigger every day.

My pole beans are what is very interesting to me because they are starting to grow all over the place and attaching themselves to anything that is near them.  Luckily I fixed this by attaching them to ropes that are hanging from the posts that I set up earlier in the season.

They should be getting flowers soon because they are producing the small buds where flowers will start growing.  Once the flower is pollinated it should begin growing beans.  I have a feeling that they will peak in a few weeks and I will be outside for about an hour picking them.

You can see that the pole beans are already starting to grow way past the poles.  All I need to do is make sure that they start growing downward.  I have about twelve feet to work with which is perfect for these beans.

My pumpkins are doing quite well and I now have at least four with another one on the way that flowered this morning.  It was kind of cloudy and there might not have been many bees around.  Once the sun came out then they were buzzing around annoying the heck out of me, but that is there job if you get in their way.  Just watch the sunflowers and you will see them very clearly.  When they open you will definitely see them.

An Update on My Gardening Progress

It has been a couple of days since I last wrote a post about how my gardening is coming along.  The last two days were quite busy and I wanted to let you know what I have done.

Cleaning up the garden was the very first thing I accomplished because it is time to start planting the spinach into the ground.  If you leave them in the container too long they might begin to bolt and this is not something that you want to happen because this means the end of the harvest.  Not only that but temperatures are begin to rise and they need to get in the ground right away so that we can take advantage of them.  This will all be happening tomorrow.

Since weather is getting warmer it is now time to start placing plants outside for the daytime sunlight.  They are in the windowsill getting some sunlight, but if you put them outside they will receive more sunlight and they will start to harden off.  This process is very important and all your plants will have to go through and why not do it as early as possible.

So far my plants are doing pretty good (knock on wood) and they seem to be enjoying the containers that they are placed in.  Here are a few pictures that I took that I think you would enjoy.

The pumpkins that sprout very quickly have began to surface.
Here is how the flowers I first grew are doing.

This is just a simple update on the progress of most of my plants.  I will bring more updates in the future so make certain that you keep in touch with this blog.
