Time to Get Those Four Types of Tomato Seeds into Containers for Indoor Planting

That is right I have four different types of tomatoes that I am going to be planting this season instead of the usual three that I grow every year.  I thought it would be good to try another type of tomato instead of the same every season.  I happen to see a couple of them in the store that I thought would be good for the garden.  I picked up big boy tomato seeds and a super beefsteak.

I would have liked to plant my tomatoes indoors a little bit sooner than this past weekend, but I think they should do fine as long as I place them under fluorescent lights to give them a good head start.  There is no room on the windowsill which makes this a necessity to put them under lights for the time being until they sprout.

Planted Tomato Seeds Indoors
I will be continuing to plant cherry and Roma tomatoes which happen to have real benefits.  Roma tomatoes can be made into sauce or other delicious foods and cherry tomatoes are just perfect placed into a salad.  If I get a large harvest of cherry tomatoes like I did last year I can make them into a salsa before they turn moldy.

Right now my spring crops have begun to sprout this past week.  All the spinach seeds that were planted are now through the soil along with other crops such as lettuce, broccoli, and some celery.  I am hoping by next week everything should be up through the soil or at least just poking through the soil.

I plan on planting some more seeds very soon which could include melons, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins and many more.  I also still have many flowers that need to be planted which will come very soon as well.

I might have to get another fluorescent light because my tomatoes are using the two that I use every season for everything.  Although I might not have to once I get my spring crop outside during the daytime I can then have more room on the windowsill.

How About Starting Tomatoes Indoors?

That is exactly what I like to do every season and is the best thing to do with these plants.  Starting them inside is probably the easiest way to get a head start on the season and since they transplant well it makes sense to start them in your home or apartment.

I always like putting them under artificial lights because getting them sprouting as soon as possible will allow you to plant more seeds once your tomato plants reach a good size.  After tomatoes I like to plant zucchini and pumpkins under these lights.  They sprout quick and will not be under these lights for very long.

Three types this year are what I am focusing on.  Granted I am planting the same as every year I figured I would let you know the three that I chose.  The steakhouse and super sauce are the same, but I did pick a different cherry tomato type that I thought I would try instead of the usual.

Planting Tomato Seeds Indoors at the Right Time

One of the most important elements in gardening is time and that is something that will be different in whatever region you happen to live.  For me March is the month when I need to start tomatoes indoors and they should be ready to go into the soil by May to June.  Most of the time I will the garden in May and by the middle of the month I will be placing many of my indoor plants into the soil.

This includes not only fruits like my tomatoes, but others such as flowers and vegetables.  Right now I only planted my steakhouse, Roma, and cherry tomato seeds.  I won't be planting vegetables until a couple of weeks or so.  I still have one fluorescent light that I can use once my spinach plants no longer need it for growing.

I have been putting spinach outside since last week and after the rain over the past couple of days the sun finally showed itself this afternoon.  I made sure that I put them outside and right now they are doing good and I want to get them into the soil very soon before they become pot bound and might start going to seed or bolting.

At the moment I have just planted tomato seeds that were able to fit under the lights with no more room for any other pots or containers.  This means I can't plant anymore because the windowsills are all filled along with my fluorescent lights.

You can see that they fit perfectly under the lights and is mainly due to the appropriate containers that I only use for tomatoes.  They are just the perfect size for these plants and as long as they sprout they will last in the soil that I gave them and the space they will have in these pots.

Three More Seeds Planted This Week

More plants were added this week and  I thought starting them a week or two earlier than last season would be a great way to increase harvest yields.  I don't normally plant tomatoes this early and they have done great when planted later, but this season I wanted to get them a much needed head start.

Instead of planting just a few of each cherry, steakhouse, and super sauce tomato I decided to grow three cherry, four steakhouse, and all twenty five seeds of super sauce.  Making sauce is what I will be focusing on this year and getting many Roma tomatoes will be my goal.  A head start for these plants makes perfect sense.

I planted one super sauce seed per pot as seen below.

I planted two cherry tomato seeds per pot.

I also had some more room underneath the fluorescent light that I am using and decided to plant three eggplants in plastic pots and six peppers in medium sized peat pots.  I still have more planting to do and once my spinach starts sprouting I will then use that light for more flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetable plantings.
