The Harvests I missed During a Week Long Rain Storm

There were many harvests I wanted to do this week, but couldn’t because of the rain storm that lasted several days.  That is why I wrote a post today to make certain that you are up to date with the latest harvests I did this afternoon.

My pumpkins were finally ready this week and I should have picked them much earlier in the week.  They have been ready for quite awhile and I just like leaving them outside in order to have them turn orange quicker.  A couple have become rotten and I had to cut them up and throw them into some compost that I will be making.  Other than that they were pretty good for being outside through this storm for this long.

Beans are another harvest that I got done today.  I actually wasn’t sure if many of them were going to be ready for picking, but when I went outside and looked at my vines I saw plenty of them that needed to be harvested right away.  Today’s harvest was quite big and I got over nine pounds of these sweet and delicious beans.

The last on today’s list are my peppers that are just still producing flowers despite the weather and are growing amazingly.  They have really good peppers on the plants I got about a dozen of them that were ready waiting to be picked.  Most of them were large sized peppers, but there were a couple that were a little bit smaller.  Nevertheless as long as they taste good I am not worried about their size.

Cherry Tomatoes are Now Ready for Harvesting

I just took a look at my tomato plants today and saw that many of them are growing good and have good looking tomatoes.  What interested me the most was my cherry tomato plants.  They had some that were perfectly red and ready to be eaten.  I had taken a few here and there that were ready about a week ago, but there wasn't enough for a harvest.  I also wanted to make sure that they tasted right.

Not any of my other tomatoes are ready for picking, but this always happens every year.  My cherry tomatoes start first and then a little bit more time passes and then I will start picking either my steakhouse tomatoes or my Roma super sauce tomatoes.  It depends on how much sun each plant gets and how long it has been growing.  Right now I think the next tomato will be one of my steakhouse tomatoes.  Those are perfect for sandwiches.

I picked 47 cherry tomatoes and this is just a first harvest.  I can't imagine how many more I will pick between the four plants that I have growing these amazing tomatoes.

I also had some beans that were ready for picking as well.  Not many beans this time, but I think once my vines get some flowers growing I will have another good harvest like I had previously.  This is just a third harvest of many more to come hopefully.

Harvesting the Most Beans and Cucumbers for 2016

I just happened to pick some more pole beans today that I wasn't sure were going to be ready.  I had been watching them over the past couple of days and I didn't want them to get too big and possibly go to seed.  That is why I wanted to pick them today and there were much more than I thought there would be that were ready for picking.

Not only did I pick beans, but I also had many more cucumbers that were ready.  I had picked some last week that were definitely good sized, but today and a couple of days ago I probably picked over a dozen and possibly two dozen.

Just Checking Out the Broccoli That My Plants are Starting to Produce

You read that right my broccoli plants are actually starting to produce fruit right now.  I wasn't sure when they would start producing, but I checked on some of them and they have broccoli right in the center of the stem.  This is where the first broccoli grows and from then on they will grow as shoots on the side throughout the year.

I was a little surprised that they are starting right now, but it is almost October so this is about the right time for them to begin producing.  Take a look at these two plants that I found to be producing broccoli.

The last zucchini and large bean harvest has been completed today.  I actually picked my last zucchini yesterday and now I can say all my squash plants are done for the season.  Since I picked my pumpkins the other day I can now focus on getting some more beans, peppers, and broccoli.

 












My beans are not completely done yet and I still have plenty of pickings to come as long as I keep watering them or we get some rain.  For now the largest harvests are over and my plants are just starting to wind down there production capacity.

The Last of The Season for Pole Beans and The Garden

Last week I picked some more pole beans that have been growing over the past month or so.  Most of the small beans that had started growing in the beginning of October have finally reached a good size for them to be harvested. 

I actually didn't think there was going to be enough to fill up one container since the previous harvests of pole beans didn't yield as much.  To my surprise four containers were needed to collect all the ripe pole beans that were ready for eating.  This pretty much marked the end of these beans for the season.  Now it is time for cleaning up the garden.

It was more like three and a half containers that were completely filled of pole beans.  They weighed over ten pounds and there was about a few hundred of them that needed to be canned for the Winter season.  Now I can enjoy them all the way up to next years harvest.

Cleaning has began a couple days ago with the removal of tomato plants and stakes.  This usually doesn't take that long and only a couple of hours at the most. 

Most of the stakes from my tomatoes and the plants have been removed.  I placed all the plants in the totes for them to be discarded or used for compost for next season.

As you can see in the background I still have my pumpkins out in the garden and haven't yet picked them.  I will most likely pick them before Halloween which is coming up this Friday.  I always like to have at least one pumpkin that will be carved and placed on the windowsill.  This is something that I like to do every year.

Cabbage plants are what I am going to be doing this fall.  Many of them are growing quite well for the lack of attention that I gave them this year.  Usually in the summer you just have to keep the soil moist for the most part.  Once the cooler weather comes then watering usually doesn't become a problem.

With the continuous rain that we have got this past month I will not have to water them for the rest of the year or until I harvest them in November hopefully.  It would be great if I could cut them at the same time that I dig up my carrots near Thanksgiving.
